What brings you to us?

What do you need help with?

Lock or key problem

A key that will not turn, a handle that has gone loose, a bolt that no longer throws properly. These usually come down to wear, alignment or a mechanism that has reached the end of its service life. Working out which one determines whether it is a repair, a replacement or an adjustment at the strike.

Relevant service: Lock Replacement in Carnegie

Not sure which of these it is? That is normal — describe what is happening when you call and we will work it out from there.

Signature

Inside the lock

A simplified pin tumbler arrangement, exploded. Different locks and door hardware use different mechanisms, which is why an assessment on site is what determines the appropriate service rather than a description over the phone.

Cylinder

The cylinder is the part the key enters. It holds the plug that rotates and the mechanism that decides whether rotation is permitted. Rekeying happens here, which is why the rest of the hardware can usually stay on the door.

Key
A key is a coded object, not a tool. Its cuts correspond to a specific arrangement inside the cylinder. A worn or poorly duplicated key can fail to lift that arrangement correctly even when the lock itself is sound.

Pins
In a pin tumbler cylinder, spring-loaded pin stacks sit across the boundary between the rotating plug and the fixed housing. The correct key raises each stack to exactly that boundary, and only then can the plug turn.
Housing
The housing is the fixed body surrounding the plug. It carries the pin chambers and springs, and it is what resists attempts to move the mechanism by force rather than by key.
Lock body
The lock body translates rotation into movement. It contains the bolt or latch and its linkages, and it is what actually holds the door closed. Mortice bodies sit inside the door edge; others mount on the face.
Strike plate
The strike plate, with its keeper, is fixed to the door jamb and receives the bolt. It is routinely overlooked and does a large share of the work. A misaligned or shallowly fixed strike undermines otherwise sound hardware.

Process

From problem to solution

  1. 01

    Listen

Understand the issue and what you actually need. Most of this happens on the phone, and it determines what gets brought to site.

  2. 02

    Assess

Look at the lock, the door and the frame together. The problem is often not where it first appears to be.

  3. 03

    Recommend

Explain the appropriate service and the options, including where doing less is the better answer.

  4. 04

    Complete

Carry out the agreed work. Anything that changes along the way gets discussed before it is done, not after.

  5. 05

    Check

Test the door from both sides, confirm the keys operate, and leave the area as it was found.

Not every job runs through all five stages in the same way — a stiff latch and a lost key are different problems. This is the shape of how we work, not a fixed procedure applied regardless of what we find.

07 — Craft

The detail matters.

Good locksmith work is about more than changing a lock. The right hardware, fit, alignment and application all matter.

A bolt that only travels two-thirds of the way into a shallow keeper looks identical to one that seats properly. The difference is invisible until the day it is not.

08 — Residential

Security starts at the front door.

Most homes have collected their hardware over decades rather than choosing it. A deadlatch from one era, a mortice from another, a sliding door lock that was never quite right, and a key ring that has grown by one key per renovation.

Residential work is mostly about matching sensible hardware to the door you actually have, then fitting it so it operates cleanly. Unglamorous, and the part that determines whether it still works properly in five years.

  • Lock replacement on worn or damaged hardware
  • New and additional lock installation
  • Rekeying after lost keys or a change of occupant
  • Access assistance when a key or lock is the obstacle
  • Reviewing the hardware on every external door
  • Houses, units, apartments and rental properties

09 — Commercial

Built for businesses too.

A commercial door might be operated three hundred times a week. A residential one, perhaps ten. That difference is the whole reason commercial hardware is a separate category rather than a heavier version of the same thing.

The other difference is people. Staff change, keys travel, contractors need access at particular times, and there is usually a landlord or managing agent with a view on what can be altered. Mapping that out first is what makes the hardware decision straightforward.

  • Retail shopfronts and glass entry doors
  • Offices and professional suites
  • Property managers and managed premises
  • Keying arrangements that separate staff access
  • Replacement and installation on heavy-use doors
  • Scheduling that works around trading hours

Fire egress, disability access and building code obligations are matters for your building surveyor or the relevant authority. We fit hardware; we do not certify compliance.

10 — Local

Carnegie, at the heart of the service.

We work from 14A Koornang Rd — on the Koornang Road strip, not on the other side of town behind a local phone number.

That matters practically rather than sentimentally. Carnegie has two distinct eras of door hardware sitting side by side: interwar and post-war brick homes still carrying their original mortice locks, and a substantial band of newer medium-density development running modern deadlatches and building entry systems.

Knowing which of those you are likely to be standing in front of is most of the information a locksmith needs before arriving.

Every property has a different entry.

More entries than people remember

A typical house around Carnegie has a front door, a back or laundry door, a garage and a gate. The front door usually gets the attention. The rear and side entries are usually where the oldest hardware is, and often where the different keys accumulate.

14 — Checklist

How secure is your entry?

Five questions, no score. This is not a security assessment — it is a short prompt to notice the things people stop noticing about a door they use every day.

An honest assessment needs someone standing in front of the door. This just helps you decide whether that is worth arranging.

Entry hardware checklist

01Is the lock difficult to operate?

02Has the lock been there for many years?

03Have keys been lost or copied?

04Has the property changed occupants?

05Has the door hardware become loose or damaged?

What customers say

We would rather show you nothing than show you something we made up.

This section is reserved for genuine customer reviews. We have not published any yet, because we do not write our own — and a page full of invented five-star quotes tells you nothing useful about whether a locksmith is any good.

If we have worked on your property and you are willing to leave a review, we would genuinely appreciate it. Real ones will appear here as they come in.

In the meantime

Judge us the way you would judge any trade: call, describe the problem, and see whether the person on the other end explains it clearly or talks around it.

All FAQs

A locksmith works on the hardware that secures doors and the keys that operate it. In practice that means replacing and installing locks, rekeying existing hardware, adjusting mechanisms that no longer operate cleanly, cutting keys and helping people regain access to property they are entitled to enter.
