Lock Installation in Carnegie

Installation is a different job to replacement. There is no existing preparation to work from, which means the position, the cut-out and the alignment are all decided on site — and all of them affect how the door operates afterwards.

Common cases include adding a lock to a door that only has a latch, fitting hardware to a new or newly hung door, or adding a secondary lock to a door that carries more responsibility than it used to.

What it involves

In practice

Every job is different, so this describes the shape of the work rather than a fixed procedure applied regardless of what we find.

  1. 01

    Deciding where the hardware belongs

Height, distance from the edge and clearance from existing hardware all affect both usability and the strength of the installation.

  2. 02

Preparing the door and the frame

Accurate cut-outs in both the door and the jamb. Both sides have to line up for the bolt to travel properly.

  3. 03

    Fitting the strike and keeper

The keeper on the frame does much of the work. It needs to be positioned and fixed so the bolt engages fully into solid material.

  4. 04

    Testing under normal use

Operating the door repeatedly from both sides, including with the door closed against the seal, to confirm nothing binds.

Worth knowing

Before you arrange anything

Not every door suits every lock

Hollow-core doors, glazed doors, aluminium frames and sliding doors each limit what can be installed. It is better to know that before parts are bought.

Think about how you will get out

Hardware that requires a key to exit affects how quickly people can leave. That is worth discussing before choosing the product, particularly on bedrooms and primary exits.
